Bugler Doyles Wexford – A Proper Irish Pub, Great Pints & Husband Daycare
Welcome to the Taste of Wexford – Captiva Food & Drink Guide, our personal collection of restaurants, cafés, bars and food experiences around County Wexford that Carmel and I genuinely enjoy and are happy to recommend to our guests.

Bugler Doyles Wexford – A Proper Irish Pub
There are some pubs that feel like part of a town rather than simply somewhere to have a drink, and Bugler Doyles on South Main Street is one of those places for us. It is a proper traditional Wexford pub: full of character, friendly, comfortable and the sort of place where it is very easy to settle in for a pint and a chat.

The pub dates back to the 1850s and has been run by brothers Andy and Pat Doyle since 1994. They have retained its traditional character while creating a pub that remains lively and welcoming today, complete with snug areas, an open fire, sport, music and a substantial beer garden.
A Traditional Irish Pub in Wexford Town

Buglers is exactly the kind of pub we are happy to recommend when guests ask us where they can experience a genuine Wexford pub rather than something designed for tourists. There are plenty of nooks and crannies, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it works equally well for a quiet daytime pint or a busier evening in town.
It is also a great spot for sport, particularly when there is a big GAA match on, and traditional music is part of the pub’s regular calendar.

The Famous “Husband Daycare”
One of the things that always makes us smile about Buglers is its “Husband Daycare” humour. Carmel can head off around Wexford Town knowing I am perfectly capable of entertaining myself in Buglers for an hour or two. A comfortable seat, good company and a pint of Guinness — there are worse ways to pass the time.

It captures the personality of the place perfectly: traditional, unpretentious and with a very Wexford sense of humour.
Memories of Con and a Creamy Pint of Guinness

Bugler Doyles also has a more personal place in our memories. I spent many happy hours there with Con, watching GAA together and enjoying the atmosphere of a busy match day. Con loved a creamy pint of Guinness, and Buglers was exactly the sort of pub where those simple afternoons became great memories.
That is one of the reasons this particular recommendation means a little more to us than simply saying where to get a good pint. Places become special because of the people, conversations and memories attached to them, and Buglers has plenty of those for our family.

Traditional Music, Sport and the Beer Garden
The pub hosts traditional Irish music regularly, with Saturday sessions throughout the year and additional Friday music during the summer. For sports fans there are plenty of screens, while the large beer garden gives you another option when the weather cooperates.
Despite its size, Buglers still manages to retain the feel of an old-fashioned Irish pub rather than a large modern bar. That balance is a big part of its appeal.
Why We Recommend Bugler Doyles to Captiva Wexford Guests
Guests staying at Captiva Wexford often ask us where they should go in Wexford Town for a genuine Irish pub experience. Bugler Doyles is one of the places we are very comfortable recommending because it is somewhere we know ourselves and somewhere that still feels authentically local.
Whether you want a pint of Guinness, traditional music, a GAA match, a chat in a cosy corner or simply somewhere to experience the atmosphere of a proper Wexford pub, it deserves a place on the list.
