Some restaurants become part of the rhythm of family life, and Ipoh in Gorey is one of those places for us. We have been dining here since they opened, and over the years it became a regular spot for lunch or dinner with our children. Looking back through these photographs brings back plenty of happy family meals.

A Gorey favourite for years

After hundreds of visits, we can comfortably say that consistency is one of Ipoh’s great strengths. Between us, we have worked our way through just about everything on the menu over the years and we have never had a bad dish. The food is consistently tasty, freshly prepared and dependable — exactly what keeps bringing us back.

A huge part of the experience is Yoko, the owner. She is a fantastic ambassador for her business: always smiling, genuinely friendly and welcoming. Just as importantly, she has built a team around her who are polite, attentive and efficient. The service has always been a big part of why Ipoh feels so easy to return to.

Food and a family lunch at Ipoh Gorey

The €25 set menu

Our usual choice is the excellent-value €25 set menu: any starter, any main course, and any drink. There is a €3 supplement for fillet, while the drink can include a bottle of beer, a glass of wine, or a soft drink such as 7Up or Coke.

Dean’s favourites

Dean’s go-to combination is Meat Sung to start, followed by Peppercorn Prawns, with a small ramekin of sweet & sour sauce on the side. To drink, it is usually a bottle of Tsingtao — or a Heineken 0.0 when driving.

Carmel’s favourites

Carmel usually chooses the Honey Ribs followed by Sweet & Sour Chicken. A glass of Pinot Grigio is the favourite accompaniment, with Coke Zero when she is driving.

Of course, one of the pleasures of having visited so often is knowing that there are plenty of other dishes worth ordering too. We have sampled the menu extensively over the years, and the standard has remained remarkably consistent.
